The Minnesota Department of Health recently sent out an alert about a new kind of sexually transmitted fungal skin infection called Trichophyton mentagrophytes or TMVII.
What do you need to know about TMVII?
TMVII was first reported in the US in June 2024 and in Minnesota in July 2025
30+ cases of TMVII have since been reported in Minnesota
TMVII looks like “ringworm” with round, coin-like rashes that are red and irritated, sometimes with bumps or pimples on top. The rashes can be itchy or painful.
The rash may be located in the genital area, face, buttocks, trunk, arms, and legs.
TMVII can be easily mistaken for eczema, psoriasis, or other skin infections.
TMVII must be treated with a oral prescription anti-fungal medication
Anti-fungal creams are not effective against TMVII
Steroid or cortisone creams can worsen TMVII
